The hornbills

This is another kind of feed which in turn gives a good return to the Hotel Owners. By giving free meals to the birds, especially the hornbills, now in return the birds are flocking to this site every morning to have the free meals. It really is an attraction to those staying in the hotel.

I had a good time taking photos of this hornbills, which normally are very rare to find. Normally these birds fly very high in the sky and can only be found very deep in the jungle.

The location itself is a very nice holiday spot in the island of Pangkor in the state of Perak. The beaches and the sea waters here are indeed so beautiful and refreshing.

Milky Stork (Mycteria cinerea)....the lonely bird!

I have been watching this bird for more than a month already and it is all alone. The small lake not far from my house is the normal place for this bird to take refuge and looking for food. Its partner must have been killed.

The sight of being alone all the time saddens me and I always wonder how the poor bird feels to be alone in this world. So, whoever killed its partner must be really an evil person indeed.

Takur Kukup/Lineated Barbet (megalaima lineata)

I browsed back on my entry on the squirrel and on the part that I mentioned about this green bird that came immediately after the squirrel left. Then my friend Tabib gave me the ID for this green bird. It was quite a big bird too, about 20cm in length. I managed to get two shots only before it flew away. I waited quite a while but the bird never came again.

Bird name: Lineated Barbet (megalaima lineata)
Local name: Takur kukup
Size: About 20cm
Location: Kampung Pari Hilir, Ipoh, Malaysia

From Dale Forbes, I have this interesting facts about 'barbet':

"One of the most fascinating things about barbets is that they have zygodactyly. Most birds have three toes that point forward and one that points back. If you look at the foot of a barbet closely, you can see how one of the barbet's front toes has "migrated south" so that it has two facing forward and two backwards. This helps them grip vertical tree trunks better.

Other birds with zygodactyly include the woodpeckers, parrots and swifts

Happy birding!!" Thanks Dale.

Burung Kunyit Besar/Black-naped Oriole (oriolus chinensis)

This morning I was awoken by this familiar sharp shrill of birds just outside my window. Of course the beautiful sound cheered me up and I rushed for my camera. Sure enough, it was the common yellow birds that never fails to sing within my area. They were a couple of them looking for food, ie the insects. Thank you to my dear friend Tabib, who has identified this bird for me. All this while I have been refering them as only the 'yellow bird'!.

Name: Black-naped Oriole (oriolus chinensis)
Local name: Burung Kunyit Besar
